Telegram Returns To Apple App Store After Brief Disappearance
Telegram has been restored to Apple's App Store after a brief unexplained removal that blocked new downloads worldwide.
App Pulled Without Warning, Restored Within Hours
Telegram's messaging app briefly vanished from Apple's App Store on August 3, 2026, before being restored the same night. Users noticed that Telegram was no longer available on the App Store in several countries including the United States, but it returned shortly after its disappearance without explanation.
Reports began showing up across social media of Telegram disappearing from the Apple App Store around 9:30 p.m. EST on Monday night. The disappearance prevented new users from downloading the messaging app on iPhones and iPads, though people who already had it installed said it continued to work normally.
Telegram confirmed the app had been restored and said it should soon be available again to all users, but the company did not publicly explain the cause of the outage.
Apple Cites Child Safety Violation
Apple eventually broke its silence. In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said: "We briefly removed Telegram from the App Store after our review found content that violates our strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material. The app was subsequently restored after the developer promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it."
Earlier that night, Telegram published a tongue-in-cheek post on X saying, "Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated." Telegram has yet to comment on the actual reason for its brief removal.
The incident is not without precedent. In 2018, Apple pulled the app after alerting founder Pavel Durov to what the company called "inappropriate content" on the platform. The app was reinstated after changes were made.
The platform, which claims more than 1 billion monthly active users, has long faced accusations in several countries of lax content moderation and failing to crack down on illegal activity. Last week, Australia's telecommunications regulator initiated civil proceedings against Telegram for allegedly failing to detect and remove "pro-terror material" from the platform, including videos of terrorist executions and mass shootings.
Telegram-linked digital assets, including GRAM (formerly TON), fell following the news.
