Brazil's Largest Bank Joins Tokenization Push

@OpenAssetsInc and @itau have announced they will jointly build tokenization proofs of concept for Brazilian capital markets, operating as a use case inside the @ANBIMA_BR distributed ledger technology (DLT) pilot. The work will cover architecture advice and an assessment of operational and compliance frameworks.

Brazil's Itaú Unibanco Holding SA is the region's largest lender, with $562.14 billion in total assets, giving the collaboration significant institutional weight. The partnership underscores growing interest from major financial institutions in putting real-world assets on-chain.

What the Pilot Tests and Who Is Involved

The pilot focuses on tokenized corporate bonds and fund shares settled on a shared ledger. B3, Brazil's stock exchange operator, the country's securities regulator, and the central bank are all participating. The testing phase runs through September.

The broader ANBIMA initiative behind this work is an ambitious effort to modernise Brazil's financial infrastructure. ANBIMA's Tokenization Initiative centres on building a framework that connects tokenized asset trading to Brazil's Drex platform, the country's central bank digital currency (CBDC) infrastructure. Anchored in the principles of Open Finance, the project emphasises standardised protocols, interoperability, and strong governance.

In 2026, the initiative is moving into onboarding, capabilities building, and testing on the DLT network, with selected projects monitored by working groups. The results will ultimately be consolidated into a final report and guidelines, with ANBIMA planning to publish the technical, operational, and regulatory lessons as a public document.

OpenAssets brings established tokenization infrastructure to the collaboration. The company builds on proven experience and infrastructure from the team behind Pointsville's tokenization and loyalty products, delivering secure digital value systems designed for institutional and sovereign use. OpenAssets has also chosen Chainlink as its partner oracle platform to support the issuance and distribution of institutional tokenized assets across on-chain finance.
